From the President’s Desk...

A Book Review by Kei Narimatsu

FLASHLIGHTS chronicles an immigrant's success story told through a reference guide to flashlights, dry cell batteries, carbon filament bulbs and the first mass maker and marketer of flashlights, the Ever Ready Company.  You'll learn the fascinating story of Akiba Horowitz, a Russian immigrant who came to the United States in 1891, immediately changed his name to Conrad Hubert and started the American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company (now the Ever Ready Company) in 1898.  He purchased the patent rights to the first wood case bicycle light and the first tubular flashlight, which became the foundation for his flashlight business.

Author Billy T. Utley weaves an intriguing story of the birth of the lowly flashlight and the company that made it, pointing out interesting facts along the way.  Did you know, for example, that the first D cell battery was created specifically for this invention?  With over 2500 illustrations, this reference book is a must for lighting aficionados, collectors or nostalgic minded folks who just want a good read.
