Micro Lamps Dramatically Improves Life Cycle Costs for Branch of U.S. Military with Switch to Based LED Replacement Lamps

January 1, 2003
Batavia, Illinois
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Micro Lamps, Inc., a leader in miniature and sub-miniature lighting solutions, recently provided significantly better life cycle costs for a branch of the U.S. military by switching incandescent lamps in a Damage Control (DC) Console to based LED replacement lamps. The changeover of a single console saved an estimated $1,495 in the first year and will save an estimated $7,795 annually in subsequent years.

Following is an overview of Micro Lamps solution with estimated cost savings:

Military technicians must constantly ensure that indicators on consoles and instrument panels are functioning properly, which often means ensuring that hundreds of miniature lamps light at the proper time. Such is the case with DC Consoles. On average, the consoles require technicians to spend roughly four hours per week maintaining the mini lamps. Most of these lamps will cost between 10 and 50 cents each, with the military generally paying $15 per hundred for the specific lamp replaced by a Micro Lamps LED product. Most of the indicator switches require four lamps, and the DC Console has more than 600 switches.

Here is how the costs break down:

Six hundred switches multiplied by four lamps per switch equals 2400 lamps times $.15 each for a total lamp cost of $360. But as maintenance professionals know, the cost of a lamp is only one element in the total life cycle cost calculation. As in this case, the costs of labor and system downtime often greatly exceed the cost of the lamps themselves.

An incandescent lamp will typically last 750-1500 hours, or roughly two months. In some cases, voltage spikes, brown outs and other factors reduce the lamp’s life dramatically. At $30-$40 per technician hour, fours hours of lamp maintenance per week costs $120-$160, or $6,240-$8,320 per year.

The cost of new LEDs is $4-$5 each. An LED, however, draws one-fourth the current of an incandescent lamp, which not only reduces the amount of power required but also reduces the draw on generators and, consequently, the amount of fuel to run the generators. This, in turn, reduces the frequency of underway replenishment and lowers fuel bills. Plus, only two LEDs are required to replace four incandescent lamps.

Further, technician labor costs occur almost entirely at the time of the initial changeover to LEDs. It required four hours to remove the old lamps and install the new LEDs in the DC Console. Once installed, the lamps essentially require little or no maintenance since LEDs can burn indefinitely. This frees a technician to perform other tasks four hours per week or 208 hours per year. Savings offset expenses in the first year and grow significantly in subsequent years.

Another expense incurred with incandescent lamps is the refurbishing of power supplies inside DC Consoles. The previously mentioned spikes and brown outs, as well as lamp tests, put the power supplies under enormous strain. Typically, the power supplies fail after two or three years and require manufacturer refurbishment, which is usually $300 per power supply, or $1800 total for the six power supplies within a DC Console. The lower current draw of LEDs dramatically reduces the strain on the power supplies and can extend their life up to four times.

Excluding the extended life of power supplies, reduced fuel costs and other periphery savings, here is a summary of the estimated savings this military branch will enjoy for each DC Console converted from incandescent lamps to Micro Lamps’ LEDs:

Incandescent Lamp Costs:

  • One technician at $30 per hour for four hours per week = $6,240.
  • 2400 lamps at $.15 each = $360 time four times per year = $1,440.
  • Total Incandescent Lamp Costs: $7,680 PER YEAR.

LED Lamp Costs:

  • One technician at $30 per hour for four hours to replace all lamps with LEDs = $120.
  • One technician at $30 per hour for 30 minutes to replace 5-10 LEDs = $15.*
  • 1200 lamps at $5 each = $6,000.
  • 10 LED replacement lamps at $5 each = $50.
  • Total LED Lamp Costs: $6,185 FIRST YEAR ONLY.
  • Total LED Costs for Subsequent Years: $65 PER YEAR.
  • Cost savings realized in first year are $1,495.
  • Cost savings realized in subsequent years are 7,795 PER YEAR.

* Under ideal circumstances, LEDs can last an unlimited amount of time. Because of special conditions, we estimate replacing 5-10 lamps per year.
